"Vitória is the capital of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. It is located on a small island within a bay where a few rivers meet the sea. It was founded in 1551. The city proper (area 93 km2 or 35.9 sq mi) has a population of 313,300 (2005) whilst the Greater Vitória metropolitan area has a population of more than 1,612,885 (2005), the 14th largest in Brazil. In 1998, the United Nations rated Vitória as the fourth best state capital in Brazil to live in, rating cities on health, education, and social improvement projects. Eurico de Aguiar Salles Airport connects Vitória with many Brazilian cities." (source: Wikipedia)
Vitória is most easily reached by plane. Three airline companies operate in Vitória's airport (IATA code VIX): TAM, Gol and Azul. International airlines partner either with TAM or Gol, taking you to a Brazilian airport hub, usually São Paulo/Guarulhos (GRU) or Rio de Janeiro International (GIG), and flying from these to Vitória.
The airport is very close to the city (10-15 minutes taxi ride to most hotels) and particularly close to the university (5 minutes if traffic is light). According to a 2010 survey, taxi rides cost about R$ 3,40 + R$ 1,85 per km (cost of taxi stopped in traffic not accounted for).
The airport is also served by three city bus lines (green buses): 122 and 163 can take you to the university, whereas 212 will go though Camburi Beach, where many hotels are located. Metropolitan buses (yellow or blue vehicles) also cross the city of Vitória, coming from/going to other cities in the Greater Vitória area. Many of them will take you from the airport to either the university or Camburi Beach. Bus fares (around R$ 2,50) can be paid inside the bus and are good for a single ride.
From within Brazil, Vitória can also be reached by bus or by car. Vitória's bus station is located in the city's historic center, about 10km away from Ufes. By car, Vitória is connected to federal roads BR 101 (connecting to Rio the Janeiro to the south and Salvador, Bahia to the north) and BR 262 (connecting to Belo Horizonte to the west). Driving in Brazilian roads can be very dangerous and is only advised to very experienced drivers.
The Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) is a Federally-funded, public university founded in 1954 as the University of Espírito Santo and federalized in 1961. Ufes has four campuses: two in Vitória, one in São Mateus (in the northern part of the state) and one in Alegre (in the southern part of the state).
According to 2012 numbers, Ufes has around 1,500 professors, 2,200 civil servants, 17 thousand undergraduate students and 3 thousand graduate students. It offers 90 undergraduate programs (of which 59 in Vitória) with about 5 thousand positions opening and 2,500 students graduating every year. In average, Ufes receives 30 thousand applications for its undergraduate programs yearly.
