Second IAOA Interdisciplinary School on Ontological Analysis

About

The International Association for Ontology and its Applications (IAOA) is happy to announce the Second Interdisciplinary Summer School on Ontological Analysis, which will take place in Vitória, ES, Brazil on September 15-19, 2014 (the week before FOIS 2014 in Rio de Janeiro).

Four world-class experts in different disciplines (Philosophy, Knowledge Representation, Logics, Conceptual Modeling and Ontology Engineering) will meet for a week with students, researchers and practitioners and present courses in complementary aspects of Applied Ontology.

The summer school will be a full immersion experience in ontology, and these experts will engage in open discussions with each other as well as interact with the participants. The following courses are confirmed:

  • Ontological Analysis and Conceptual Modeling: Nicola Guarino (Laboratory for Applied Ontology, Italy)
  • Designing and Building Enterprise Ontologies: Michael Uschold (Semantic Arts, Inc., USA) 
  • Formal Ontology: Kit Fine (New York University, USA)
  • Knowledge Representation in Description Logics: Renata Wasserman (IME, USP, Brazil)

In addition to the courses, a number of shorter invited talks are expected, including:

  • Types, Semantics and Ontology: Nicholas Asher (CNRS, Laboratoire IRIT, France)
  • Process Ontologies: Michael Grüninger (University of Toronto, Canada)
  •  An Introduction to Applied Ontology: Giancarlo Guizzardi (Federal University of Espírito Santo, Brazil)
