History of IAOA

History

The Association was formally established in Trento on April 29th 2009. IAOA was then legally located in Trento, Italy, at the Laboratory for Applied Ontology, ISTC – CNR.

Being an international Association, the possibility of having no Italian-speaking EC member would hamper the understanding of legal regulations and requirements by the EC. The decision was thus taken in 2013 to relocate in a country where such language issues could be minimized for an extended future, and Switzerland was chosen.

The new Association, with the same name, was formally established in Bern, Switzerland, on June 23, 2016, and legally located at the Institute of Computer Science, University of Bern.

2018 was the transition year in which the membership passed from the Italian association, which is expected to be closed when possible from an administrative point of view, to the Swiss association. The original Italian IAOA association still exists with a reduced membership and works in synergy with the new IAOA in Switzerland. IAOA Italy has its own webpages here.
