Dear IAOA members,

The IAOA ordinary assembly is now open, namely the voting period for the approval of the IAOA Financial Report 2022.

Information regarding this ordinary assembly is on the wiki page: https://wiki.iaoa.org/index.php/IAOA_Assembly_2023_09

The ballot is open from now, September 07, till September 15, 2023 (23:59, AoE = UTC-12).

To cast your vote, you have to:

* log in onto our website,  i.e. at https://iaoa.org/wp-login.php

(Note: if you cannot log in, you might have lost your password –see https://iaoa.org/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword, or you haven’t renewed your membership. Membership registration is blocked during the ballot period.)

* go to the 2022 Financial Report Approval page at https://iaoa.org/members/users/iaoa-vote2023.php

(voting page also accessible from the Utilities page in the Member Area)

* cast your vote by clicking your preference in the voting form and submitting it

Should you have any question, comment or motion proposal, feel free to send a message to info@iaoa.org, or to post a public message to this list.

Please don’t forget to cast your vote, even if you intend to abstain. Every vote is important!

The voting period closes on September 15, 2023 at 23:59, AoE (= UTC-12)

Voting results will be announced on the mailing list on September 18, 2023.

Please be advised that the 2022 Financial Report and Auditors’ report are now available for your review on the IAOA website [1,2]. The discussion phase is ongoing, so please share any questions or comments to the mailing list [3]. The ballot, during which you are encouraged to vote on the financial report, will be held from Thursday, September 07 to Friday, September 15.

Dear IAOA members,

soon a 2023 IAOA Ordinary Assembly [1] will be held online, the main purpose of which is to examine and approve the 2022 IAOA Financial Report (forthcoming).

   –> The most important dates of the assembly are:

       – Thu, Aug 24 – proposals of additional agenda items due

       – Thu, Sept 07 – discussion phase ends

       – Thu, Sept 07 – assembly called to order, ballot starts

       – Fri, Sept 15 – ballot closes

       – TBD within Mon-Wed, Sept 18-20 – public assembly session

                             (during the online part of FOIS 2023)

The assembly session will address general updates on IAOA, recent and upcoming major events as well as the results of the ballot. Please see the assembly page [1] with further details on the overall assembly. Note that the 2022 Financial Report and Auditors’ report are forthcoming by Aug 28, 2023.

  –> All members are welcome to propose additional agenda items

      until Thu, Aug 24, 2023.

We will be grateful for your participation in the ballot as well as for any prior input on the matter during the discussion phase (e.g., writing to [2]). Active involvement in IAOA is valuable to our whole community. Proposals for additional agenda items may be made by replying to this email, or sending a separate message to the mailing list [2].

Title: The psychology and philosophy of concept combination

Abstract:

I will review a wider range of research into the problem of how prototype concepts combine. When nouns are placed in a noun-noun compound, (e.g. CRIMINAL LAWYER) different strategies can be used in English to arrive at a semantic interpretation. I will discuss some of the processes involved, and the effects of stress. The second part of my talk will examine how people interpret logical connectives when applied to vague semantic categories such as Vehicle or Fruit. Finally I will present some new data looking at how people judge a conjunction of two vague predicates, as in “These sunglasses are large and dark” where both size and shade of a set of sunglasses are distributed around a vague boundary.

Educated at Cambridge and University College London. Professor of Psychology, City, University of London since 1977. Visiting appointments at Stanford, Cornell, Chicago (as a Fulbright Fellow), Yale, NYU, Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, and Utrecht. Over 100 publications on the psychology and philosophy of concepts.

The IAOA [4] has created ESAO [1], an educational effort directed towards topics of Applied Ontology, primarily established basics and foundations.


The series is inspired by the Interdisciplinary Schools on Applied Ontology (ISAO) [5] (for the next ISAO edition during July 10-14, 2023, please see [6] – ! EARLY REGISTRATION for ISAO 2023 closes on June 11 (EDT) !). ESAO is complementary in format and its overall approach. The goal is to provide a combination of an archive of educational material (e.g., short video lectures) and a series of webinars for presenting and discussing that material.
