JOWO 2025 Call for Workshops
JOWO 2025 Episode XI: The Sicilian Summer under the Etna
08-09 September 2025 (Catania, Italy) – co-located with FOIS 2025
The chairs for JOWO 2025 invite proposals for workshops to be held on-site in conjunction with FOIS 2025 which will take place September 8-12, 2025 in Catania, Italy.
The mission of the Joint Ontology Workshops (JOWO) is to facilitate collaboration among diverse communities interested in building, reasoning with, and applying formal ontologies in information sciences, artificial intelligence theory and applications, philosophy and cognitive science, and beyond.
As in earlier years, all contributions to accepted workshops will be published open access in a joint CEUR proceedings volume (unless opting out), within the IAOA series at CEUR (http://ceur-ws.org/iaoa.html). This series is indexed by SCOPUS and DBLP.

Title of the talk: Extending the design space of ontologization practices: Using bCLEARer as an example
Abstract: The aim of this seminar is to suggest that the design space for the ontologization process is richer than current practice would suggest. That it is possible to open the space up to a range of radically new practices. This consciously builds upon the notion that engineering processes as well as products need to be designed. We provide evidence for the new practices from our work over the last three decades with an outlier methodology, bCLEARer. We also provide some contextual scaffolding for a perspective that we have found we needed to better understand the nature of these new practices. This is an evolutionary perspective which sees digitalization (the evolutionary emergence of computing technologies) as part of the latest step in a long evolutionary trail of information transitions. And sees ontologization as a tool for exploiting the emerging opportunities offered by digitalization.

Title of the talk: Competency questions.
Abstract: Competency Questions (CQs) for ontologies were initially proposed as a way to assist with scoping of an ontology’s content requirements for ontology development, but gradually have been taking up more diverse uses, including ontology validation and reuse, and as part of test-driven development of ontologies. Since authoring CQs is perceived as an arduous and error-prone task, research efforts have gone into automated writing assistance, the notion of what good and bad CQs are, and their formalisation into OWL and SPARQL queries. This ESAO webinar will cover CQ foundations and recent advances in research on CQs for ontologies.

ONTOLOGY SUMMIT 2024
=======================================================
Topic: Hybrid Neuro-Symbolic Techniques for and with Ontologies and Knowledge Graphs

The Ontology Summit is an annual series of events that involves the ontology community and communities related to each year’s theme chosen for the summit. The Ontology Summit was started by Ontolog and NIST, and the program has been co-organized by Ontolog and NIST along with the co-sponsorship of other organizations that are supportive of the Summit goals and objectives.
As part of Ontolog’s general advocacy to bring ontology science and related engineering into the mainstream, we endeavor to facilitate discussion and knowledge sharing amongst stakeholders and interested parties relevant to the use of ontologies. The results will be synthesized and summarized in the form of the Ontology Summit 2024 Communiqué, with expanded supporting material provided on the web and in journal articles.
